In Pennington Gap, VA, there is a rock face that has intrigued people for decades. Some believe it to be a natural formation, while others believe that Native Americas carved it to show the beginning of Cherokee holy land.
Notably, this rock face has been renamed The Great Stone Face or Stone Face Rock. Like numerous places in the US, placenames had the n-word in them and this one had been called N-word Head Rock. There are postcards and collectors plates with this derogatory racist name. In the 1960s the United States Geological Survey board began renaming the offensive names, though most only replaced the n-word with negro or colored. This particular stone was renamed in the 1970s and they removed the offensive part altogether.
