Fort Proctor

Fort Proctor can be seen in the distance from Shell Beach. It is accessible only by boat and still guarded by a wall of shells. When it was built and even in fairly recent time, the castle-like structure was on land. With climate change, Lake Borne has slowly pushed the fort out of reach by feet.

Right before the civil war, the fort was built so New Orleans could protect the waterways. Before it was put in use, a hurricane damaged the structure and then the civil war erupted so no one had time to fix it.

Depending on current and canal traffic, it is between a 10 and 30 minute paddle. You can explore the inside if you don’t mind being waist deep in water.
